All About Etsy…

Hello Friends.

Today we bring you a crash course in Etsy. We know you are all familiar with our shop (hint hint, gentle nudge), but perhaps you have been so engrossed in our treasures that you haven’t yet managed to poke around much further…

So, here it is in a nutshell:

In their own words:

What Is Etsy?

Etsy is the world’s most vibrant handmade marketplace. We connect consumers with independent creators and designers to find the very best in handmade goods, while providing these artists with the technology and information they need to start and grow their own businesses.

Etsy is a community that actively supports one another in the shared goal of offering alternatives to mass-produced objects. We work to highlight the true value of handmade goods and their creators and encourage awareness of the social and environmental implications of production and consumption.

We created Etsy to reconnect producer and consumer, and swing the pendulum back to a time when we bought our bread from the baker, food from the farmer, and shoes from the cobbler. Our mission is to enable people to make a living making things, and to reconnect makers with buyers. Our vision is to build a new economy and present a better choice: Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade.

Etsy is huge – a big, colourful, textural whirlwind of creativity. You will discover so many clever people with such clever ideas, many of which you will wish you dreamt up first. (Like any creative space, however, you will also come across some less than inspired attempts by well intentioned, mildly skilled folk – sorry, it’s true and I felt you should be warned. Don’t let it put you off though, it makes for entertaining browsing.)

You can shop in so many ways:

:: Simply browse the items shown on the front page – click an image to see it listed in more detail, and follow it back to that sellers store if you like their style

:: Search by Category, Colour, Gift Guide or Location…. or take a chance on a newbie store still yearning for their first sale with Pounce.

Then there are the Treasuries… oh, so many lovely collections! Treasuries are ‘an ever-changing, member-curated shopping gallery’. The most popular make it to Etsy’s home page – like these ones of our very own!:

{Credit where credit is due: it is the clever Alison with her graphic designers eye that creates our Treasuries, and a jolly fine job she does too. Megan is the blogger and professional procrastinator}.

Perhaps that is enough for now, we don’t want to overload you. Etsy is best explored one cup of tea at a time. And of course, we know you have already dipped your toe in the water from the safe harbour of our very own store….

…. you know, the one that looks like this:

Ok, off you go, there is so much to explore. Be sure to leave a comment and tell us of your adventures…

Creative Crush Wednesday: More Design Please

Welcome Friends.

A yummy addition to your burgeoning blog list:

We know that we now have you addicted to Pinterest, so you will have already seen many clever tid-bits from this fabulous site (like this lovely light shade that seems to be pinned everyday!).

In her own words:

Hey, I’m Summer. More Design Please is a product of my overflowing imagination. I decided to start this blog to introduce you to the wonderful things I come across in life. During the day I work as an Art Director in Los Angeles, and at night- a crafting, home decor and food enthusiast. My particular taste can be attributed to growing up all over the southwest. Raised in Southern California, moving to New Mexico, tiptoeing through good’ol Texas then rounding back to California again- I’ve been greatly influenced by this beautiful region of the world. I love warm earthy colors, cozy inviting spaces, and unique objects with rich cultural history. My personal taste is a melting pot of new and vintage, vibrant and subdued, whimsical and modern… you can call me a schizoprenic designer becuase I’m all over the place. But the one thing that ties these things together is their beauty. And I think that’s what I really want to share with the world- the beautiful things in life that we tend to overlook.

And share she does! As erratic but well intentioned newbie bloggers ourselves, we are in awe of the regularity, consistency and all round loveliness of Summer’s blogs. Curated from far and wide on the www, the DIY section alone will have you ready to bust out your crafty toolbox and whip up some surprisingly easy new treats.

We have managed to keep our love of sugar and voracious appetites out of our encounters with you here so far, but we just have to share this post you will find under ‘Food’:

Yes please!

Get cracking then, much prettiness awaits you – you’re welcome.
